Niko Schlenker

Born in Stendal in 1960 to Manfred and Ursula Schlenker, a married couple of church musicians, he learnt to play the violin and piano at an early age. As a teenager, he was a member of a number of church bands and played several church tours throughout Germany. He studied church music in Greifswald and later piano with Prof Manfred Schmitz at the Weimar University of Music “Franz Liszt”. In 1987, he moved to Freiburg and worked as an instrumental teacher.

There he began his career as a choir director. During the 1990s, he toured as a pianist and through French piano bars. He accompanied the renowned U.S.A. Mass Choir on the Hammond organ. He gained further inspiration in African bands. Niko Schlenker lives near Cologne and has successfully dedicated himself to gospel music as an arranger, choir and workshop leader. He is particularly focussed on the creative new American gospel scene. He was musical director of the well-known LivinGospel Choir (CD Tell The World) and accompanied the musical Oh Happy Day. In 2006, he founded the Angelic Gospel Singers and the choirs Joy of Gospel and River of Joy. He is inspired by his Christian faith and is now considered one of the most creative and productive gospel composers in Germany.

With his vocal quartet The Angels and other renowned gospel artists, he produced the albums Reasons, New Day – New Song, Greater Than Anything and Life in 4D.
