Sonnengesang
Canticle of the Sun
Choral symphony to Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun, which impresses with its unusual sound colouring and special orchestration. Fascinating moods, jazzy harmonies and a children’s choir alongside the mixed choir describe the text by Francis of Assisi, which was written in the 13th century.
Each of the ten verses has its own unique sound. The voices are divided into a children’s choir and small and large choir parts, which can also be performed by one choir. The composer has given each verse its own formal progression: They include a sonata movement, Fugue and Passacaglia.
Composer Christian Scheel has created a great work for an important hymn!
“The Canticle of the Sun by composer Christian Scheel presents itself in great hymnic splendour.
Christian Scheel has succeeded in creating a sophisticated setting of the Canticle of the Sun that deserves further performances.” Musik & Kirche
“The composer succeeded in popularising this immortal prayer, a hymn of praise to creation and nature, without losing any of its musical substance or inventiveness.” Nordwest-Zeitung
